Vratsata Gorge

Vratsata is the natural symbol of Vratsa. The narrow gorge of the Leva river begins at the south-western edge of town, and the sheer cliffs on both sides rise more than 400 m – among the highest on the Balkan Peninsula. At its narrowest point the gorge is only about 30 m wide.

The town owes its name to the gorge: in the Middle Ages it was called Vratitsa (“little gate”), and remains of the medieval fortress of the same name (10th–12th century) can still be seen here. Vratsata has been a protected natural landmark since 1964 and is part of the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park.

• The views – the gorge is about 3 km long and every bend reveals a new view of the rock walls. Take your time for photos.
• Climbing – Vratsata is the most popular climbing area in Bulgaria, with more than 140 marked alpine routes of varying difficulty, some longer than 400 m. Climbing requires experience and equipment, or a mountain guide.
• Vratitsa fortress – remains of the medieval fortress that gave the town its name.
• Start of mountain routes – the road continues to Ledenika Cave (about 12–13 km further on), the village of Zgorigrad and Parshevitsa hut.

By car: The gorge begins at the south-western edge of Vratsa, a few minutes’ drive from the hotel. The road to Ledenika Cave runs through it, so it is a natural stop on the way.

On foot: You can also walk to the start of the gorge from the town centre. Please note that the road through the gorge carries traffic, so walk carefully.

• Free access all year round – there is no entrance fee.
• Take care below the cliffs. Avoid standing directly under the rock walls, especially after rain or in strong wind.
• Shoes and weather. Comfortable shoes are enough for a short walk, but check the forecast before heading into the mountains – conditions change quickly.
• Do not set off on an unfamiliar trail without information about its length and markings. Up-to-date information is available from the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park.
• Combine it with more sights. Vratsata is on the way to Ledenika Cave, and nearby you can see Skaklya Waterfall and the Regional History Museum.
