The Bistrets Monastery of St Ivan of Rila (Pusti) – Kasinets is a quiet and beautiful place at the foot of the Vratsa Balkan, north-west of Vratsa. It is perfect for a short escape from town – with a little history, nature and peace.
The monastery is first mentioned in writing in 1544. In 1822 the first icon-printing workshop in Bulgaria operated here, and craftsmen of the Chiprovtsi school made church plate and jewellery. Traces of much older worship – going back to the Thracians – have been found in the nearby caves. The medieval Kasina fortress (12th–14th century) is also nearby.

- The rock wreath with a karst spring – a spring gushes out at the foot of the cliffs next to the monastery.
- Remains of frescoes on the western wall of the rock wreath.
- A gazebo with a view of the surroundings – nice for a short rest.
How to get there from Hotel Mira
By car: Leave Vratsa on the road to Montana. After about 12 km, follow the turn-off marked with a brown information sign. The asphalt road leads all the way to the monastery gate.
