Skaklya Waterfall is about 141 m high and is one of the highest waterfalls in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula. It lies about 1.5 km south of Vratsa, behind the Kaleto hill, within the Vratsa Karst reserve. When it is in full flow, it can be seen from many places in town and even from afar as you drive towards Vratsa.
The important thing to know is that Skaklya is a seasonal waterfall. In dry periods the water drops considerably or almost disappears. It is at its most impressive after the snow melts in late winter and early spring, and after prolonged rain.
When to see it
- Late winter and spring – after the snow melts, the waterfall is at its fullest.
- After heavy rain – at any time of year, Skaklya comes to life after a few rainy days.
- In a dry summer – there may be very little water, but the hike is still worth it for the view over Vratsa and the plain.
How to get there from Hotel Mira
A common approach starts from the area above the hospital in Vratsa – a few minutes by car or taxi from the hotel. According to the Vratsa Balkan Nature Park, the climb to the foot of the waterfall takes about an hour.
The time depends on your pace, the weather and the condition of the trail. Skaklya is not an urban attraction with paths and railings – this is mountain terrain within a reserve, so please stay on the marked trails.

- Water and weather – bring water and check the forecast. Avoid the trail during thunderstorms or in icy conditions.
