Ledenika Cave

Ledenika Cave is the most visited cave in North-West Bulgaria and one of the best reasons to spend at least half a day in the Vratsa Balkan mountains. It lies about 16 km from Vratsa, at roughly 830 m above sea level. The road from town climbs through the Vratsata gorge and up the mountain in a series of bends, so the drive itself is part of the experience.

The cave takes its name from the ice icicles, stalactites and stalagmites that form near its entrance in the colder months (“led” means “ice” in Bulgarian). Further inside, the temperature stays almost the same all year round – around 8°C – and the air is humid.

Ledenika has around ten halls connected by narrow passages. The visitor route is about 350 m long and is walked in groups with a guide.

• The entrance halls – in winter this is where the ice formations that gave the cave its name appear.
• The Concert Hall – the largest hall in the cave. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, concerts have been held here for decades.
• The Lake of Wishes – a small, shallow pool. According to local belief, the wish of anyone who dips a hand into it comes true.
• Stalactites, stalagmites and columns – remarkable karst formations all along the route.

The guided visit takes about an hour. In places the passages are low and narrow, and there are steps along the route.

By car: From Hotel Mira (8 San Stefano St.) head towards the Vratsata gorge and follow the signs for Ledenika. The distance is about 16 km and the drive takes around 25–30 minutes because of the mountain bends.

On foot: A marked eco-trail leads from Vratsa up to the cave. It suits visitors who want to combine the visit with a longer hike in the mountains. Allow several hours and wear comfortable shoes.

By taxi: If you don’t have a car, our reception will be happy to call a taxi for you.

According to the official website of Ledenika Park, the cave is open every day, with no day off:

• Opening hours: 9:00 – 17:00
• Entry: every hour on the hour; the last group enters at 16:00.
• Tickets: sold at the ticket office in the Prilepa visitor centre next to the cave entrance. There are discounts for pupils, students and pensioners, as well as for organised groups. Guided tours in a foreign language are also available.
• Groups of more than 10 people: please book in advance.

Opening hours and prices may change, especially on public holidays and in winter. Please check the current prices on the park’s website or call the ticket office before you set off.

The cave is surrounded by a whole visitor park, so plan extra time – especially if you are travelling with children:

• Prilepa visitor centre – a bat-shaped building with a projection hall and a 5D cinema.
• “Sound and Light” show – a light and sound show inside the cave itself.
• Fairy-tale Alley – a path with well-known fairy-tale characters and an open-air stage for the little ones.
• “Mum, Dad and Us” play area – rope structures and a children’s playground next to the cave entrance.
• Mini trains and eco-trails – for exploring the surrounding area.

• Dress warmly. It is around 8°C inside even in summer, so bring a jacket or a fleece.
• Wear sturdy shoes. The floor is wet and slippery in places.
• Be ready for low passages. In some places you will need to bend down. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
• Plan your arrival. Groups enter on the hour, so if you come at the weekend, aim to arrive in time for a convenient group.
• Combine it with more sights. The Vratsata gorge is on the way, and nearby you can visit Skaklya Waterfall, the Bridge of God and the Regional History Museum in Vratsa.

What are the cave’s opening hours?
